As we head into the summer holidays, this oneโ€™s for anyone in my network with kids thinking about getting some work experience or just starting to explore career options.

After a brilliant work experience week in our office (including hosting my nephew for a day), I was reminded just how valuable these early experiences can be. Whether itโ€™s a week-long placement, a part-time job, or a volunteering opportunity โ€” it all counts.

Here are my top tips for students starting out:

1. Be proactive, not passive
Donโ€™t wait for opportunities, go out and find them. Ask around, send that message, knock on that door. Youโ€™ll be surprised how often people are willing to help when you show initiative.

2. Say yes to everything (within reason!)
From making tea to sitting in on meetings, itโ€™s all experience. These moments build confidence, communication skills, and resilience.

3. Use all the tools available to you
Thereโ€™s never been a better time to access knowledge and support. Use LinkedIn, online courses, and yes even tools like ChatGPT to help you draft messages, prepare for interviews or explore careers. Just remember always be yourself. Authenticity is what people connect with most.

4. Build your network early
Whether itโ€™s a manager, mentor, or someone you just clicked with then stay in touch. A simple thank-you message can leave a lasting impression and open doors down the line.

5. All experience is valuable retail, hospitality, volunteering or whatever it is, itโ€™s building the foundation. Everything is transferable, and every role helps you grow in confidence.

And for the parents:
Encourage independence but stay close enough to cheer them on. Sometimes just taking that first step is the biggest win.
