Tip No.10:

How to Switch Industries After Year in the Same One

For the final week of this written series (before we move over to video shorts!), I’m tackling one of the biggest questions I get asked:

I've been in the same industry for years - How do I make the leap into something new?

It can feel daunting, but I’ve seen it done successfully many times. Here’s how:

1. Reframe your experience as transferable

Don’t get stuck on job titles. Focus on the skills you’ve built β€” leadership, stakeholder management, project delivery, compliance, analysis β€” these cut across industries. Translate your CV into the language of your target sector.

2. Show curiosity and do your homework

Hiring managers want proof you’re serious about the move. Research their industry, understand the challenges, and connect with people in it. Show them you’ve invested the time.

3. Build your network in the new space
Engage with leaders, recruiters, and companies in your target sector. Comment on posts, attend events, and start conversations. Your network is your bridge.

4. Be realistic but confident
Switching industries might mean a sideways move first, but once you’re in, your experience will give you momentum to progress quickly.

5. Craft your story
In interviews, don’t apologise for moving - own it.. Share why you’re making the switch and how your background adds a fresh perspective. Confidence in your story builds confidence in you.

Making the leap isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely possible with the right positioning and mindset.

Have you ever switched industries successfully? Or thought about it but hesitated? Share your story below, it might inspire someone else to take the leap.
